Friends:
This Sunday is my next to the last time to preach at GPC, and I've chosen a theme that emerged during our recent vacation in Seattle. While there, I visited the new chapel at Seattle University. Though small, it has received major architectural awards. I found it a fascinating and stunning spiritual space, and in a brochure read about what was behind the design. The architect describes his intent as creating a "bottle of light" that reflects a key theme in the work of Saint Ignatius -- that our life is a blend of times of "consolation" and times of "desolation." The more I thought about this, the more I experienced the value of this simple perspective. When I searched the Scriptures for texts that express this truth, I came to three famous passages -- Psalm 23, Ecclesiastes 3 ("For everything there is a season...") and the Beatitudes in Matthew 5. These Scriptures, this theme, and a few slides will form the core of the service.
This will be a great Sunday for musical variety. The band will lead the first part of the service, the three Grant girls will play some selections on our newly restored piano, Jo will accompany the hymns, and the Amazing Grace Notes jazz ensemble will close the service with a postlude.
At 11, Anna and the Christian Education Committee will present the annual teacher training event.
If you are in town, I hope to see you Sunday.
Steve
